That said, it's also $700 more than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, which went without an update this year.
That's $200 more than the $1,799 MacBook Pro it replaces, though it adds a whole lot so it's not a huge issue. This stings: the 14-inch MacBook Pro 2021 starts at $1,999.

However, Ars Technica’s review makes repeated mention of “heat problems” with the average CPU temp climbing over 90C in intensive benchmarks and the laptop’s software having to put the brakes on performance to stop the processor overheating. The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4, which uses an eight-core Intel Core i7-11800H processor, could be considered a direct rival to the MacBook Pro 16in. This isn’t only an issue with older Intel processors, either. The 2021 model just doesn’t have that problem. There were times when the 2019 MacBook Pro was uncomfortably hot to touch, especially the strip of metal above the keyboard. It’s consistently running at about half the temperature of the Intel model, whilst performing the same kind of tasks. In fact, you would occasionally see the overall system temperature tip over into three figures when the laptop was put under strain, causing those fans to roar.īy comparison, the 2021 model running on the M1 Pro barely ever breaks the 50C mark. Note two things: first, that the y-axis is different on each graph, so although the temperatures look roughly even, the 2021 model is actually much cooler if you look at the numbers and that I’ve taken temperatures from a ‘performance’ core rather than an ‘efficiency’ core on the new MacBook Pro to keep the comparison as fair as possible. Here’s a graph showing the temperatures of the first processor core on each machine, with the older Intel-based machine on the left again. The reason the fans aren’t necessary is because the core components on the new MacBook Pro aren’t getting anywhere near as toasty as they were on the old Intel-based model. And the MacBook handled them all without breaking sweat. All of these tasks running simultaneously weren’t enough to draw a whisper of noise from the fans. In a bid to try and make the laptop sweat I opened a web browser with several tabs open and started running a 4K video from YouTube I then started a game of Football Manager 2022 running in the background at the same time I opened a 52-page document in Word, a 10-page document in Adobe InDesign and then started editing RAW photo files in Adobe Photoshop.
